Dirty Jobs vs. Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Since graduate school I’ve worked as a graphic designer and have warmed to the idea of advertising as an art form. While most posters adorning NYC’s mass-transit platforms and kiosks are rubbish, this new campaign for The Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe is something special.

I would bet money that the campaign designers had the 16th Century Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo in mind.

The grotesque patina of filth covering the show’s host is variably labeled with such grossness as  “monkey pee” “tripe processor” and “hippo wrangler.”

The show is great because it is entertaining, well crafted, and brings a headiness and humanness to American jobs that “make civilized life possible.”

Anyone know who designed these?
